Places to see in Capri

Places to see in Capri

Capri has plenty of things to do for both adults and children alike. You really can’t go wrong, no matter what you decide to do. Even if you lay on the beaches all day, it’s an experience that you’ll probably cherish for a lifetime.

We recommend traveling around, though, and exploring the island.

From visiting natural landscapes to touring Italian villas, here are some of our favorite things to do in Capri:

1. Take a Boat Tour of the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto)

Blue Grotto is the sight you’ll probably see on every postcard on the island. A simple postcard can’t do it justice, though, so you’ll just have to see it for yourself!

This cave is famous for its beautiful blue waters that shimmer from sunlight reflecting off the rock walls above it, creating a breathtaking scene.

This cave is only accessible by boat tour, which can be booked at any tourist office on the island or online before arriving in Capri.

2. Tour the 19th Century Villa, San Michele

This 19th-century botanical garden villa was once owned by Axel Munthe, a Swedish doctor. He loved Italy to the point of buying a villa here (who can blame him, though?), and the combination of botanical gardens and panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea is enough to convince travelers to visit.

This villa is located in Anacapri and can be accessed by bus.

3. Walk around in the Town of Capri & Eat Gelato

Capri is where you’ll discover many shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as plenty of tourists and locals milling around. There are also some historic buildings worth seeing, including Villa Jovis and Villa del Damecuta.

If you’re ready to get your shopping on, we recommend checking out the designer stores on Via Camerelle.

Or you can simply eat gelato and people-watch in the center square: Piazza Umberto I. Nothing wrong with a bit of people-watching!

4. Enjoy the Views at Monte Solaro

If you’re a hiker or simply searching for the best views in Capri, you’ll want to go to the highest peak of the island, Monte Solaro. It’s probably the first thing you’ll see when you arrive, considering it’s a mountain that rises above the Marina Grande.

For the hikers out there, you can take the path that begins in Anacapri. Even if you’re not big into hiking, it’s a relatively easy walk, and you can enjoy the flora and views on the way up (or you can just take the chairlift up – we won’t say anything!)

Best Foods in Capri

Caprese food

When it comes to food, Italy is the place to be. No wonder Capri is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. It’s hard to beat amazing views and good food!

Here’s a list of the must-try foods of Capri, Italy:

  • The famous Caprese salad, made with mozzarella cheese and tomatoes and named after the island where it originated.
  • Everyone’s favorite: pasta with pesto sauce, which is a mixture of basil leaves, pine nuts, garlic, and olive oil. Pesto sauce goes well on pasta or can be eaten as an appetizer dip with breadsticks.
  • For seafood lovers, we recommend seafood risotto, a dish consisting of rice cooked with fish and shellfish broth. Don’t forget the cheese and wine!
  • Cuttlefish, a Caprian staple, is often served with potatoes and a slice of toasted bread. It sounds bold, but it tastes amazing.
  • For dessert, don’t miss a slice of torta caprese, a typical almond and chocolate cake of Capri.

The list could go on and on, as there’s a variety of amazing foods to try in Capri.

Traditionally, meals on this island are finished with a shot of limoncello, which is a lemon-flavored alcoholic drink that many locals make on their own.
